FULLY GUIDED EXPERIENCE! 2.30 HOURS GUIDED TOUR OF THE GEOTHERMAL PARKS AND LUNCH WITH WINE TASTING IN TUSCANY! ALL INCLUSIVE!
Welcome to the Port of Piombino!
This is the gateway to the southern part of Tuscany, the gateway to the area called "Maremma". Still untouched, still unknown but one of the most beautiful in the entire Country!
Today we will take you to one of the most interesting National Park of our region, the Geothermal Parks of Larderello and Monterotondo where you will see how we can use the natural pwer sources of Mother Nature in a unique itinerary that will not be found anywhere else in our country...the name of this area is the Devil's Valley!
We will start the tour from a village called Larderello a tiny village with less than 1000 citizens but that produces 10% of the Geothermal Energy of the World! Here you will visit the Museo della Geotermia (Geothermal Museum) on a guied tour which is located inside a wonderful bulding, completely restored and full of interactive screens.
The region was known from ancient times for its volcanic nature and exceptionally hot springs. The Romans used its sulphur springs for bathing.
Known as Montecerboli until the 19th century, it became one of the first places in the world where geothermal energy was exploited to support industry. In 1827 Francois de Larderel, a frenchman, invented a way of extracting boric acid from the volcanic mud by using steam to heat cauldrons to separate the two. Leopold II, Grand Duke of Tuscany was an enthusiastic supporter of Larderel's scheme and awarded him the title of Count of Montecerboli a decade later. A town, named Larderello in honour of Larderel's work, was founded to house the workers in the boric acid production factory.
The region was the site of a pioneering experiment in the production of energy from geothermal sources in 1904, when five light bulbs were lit by electricity produced through steam emerging from vents in the ground - the first ever practical demonstration of geothermal power.
A natural GEYSER will be opened jst for you!
A unique tour that will show you Tuscany under a different point of view!
Later on we will leave the Geothermal Park to head to a local family owned winery in the Tuscan countryside where you will have a great lunch paired with fantastic Wines and Extra Virgin Olive Oil! Sit down and relax!
On the way back to the port we will stop by the gulf of Baratti and Populonia to enjoy a Gelato (Ice cream) before returning to the ship!
